The Bomb Squad, by Joe Neumaier
.....Call them Hollywood's Bomb Squad: actors who work constantly,
despite appearing in flop after box-office flop.
Fawning press, designer fashions and invitations to
Tinseltown's chic parties can't hide the track record of this dubious crew, some of whom
generate plenty of buzz but almost never draw large enough audiences to turn profits for
their studios.
And we're not talking about minor character actors. These
are some of the biggest names in the business, supposedly bankable stars like Val Kilmer,
Winona Ryder, Uma Thurman and Antonio Banderas, each of whom gets paid
millions, no matter how badly their pictures tank.

.....Will Hollywood ever see these stars as liabilities?
"It's bizarre that certain people have this Teflon
quality that allows them to withstand flops," says Dade Hayes, who covers the film
industry for Daily Variety.
"I also think there's this reservoir of affection for
certain stars, like John Travolta. Executives and agents who have given him seventh
and eighth and ninth chances. They're rooting for him because they grew up with
'Saturday Night Fever.'"
