Scottish actor can't believe his luck

Gerard Butler still finds it hard to believe Andrew Lloyd Webber and director
Joel Schumacher picked him to star in the film version of the hit musical
Phantom Of The Opera.
“I’m not much of a singer,” the Scottish actor confessed to journalists in New
York. “I had sung in a band for fun but I certainly hadn’t sung this sort of
stuff before.”
He auditioned for Schumacher who then took him Lloyd Webber’s house to sing for
him.
“I sang Music Of The Night and it apparently went great,” said Butler. “ I
thought I was terrible but he thought I was okay, so they offered me the role.”
Butler practised his singing while filming Lara Croft 2: The Cradle Of Life, in
which he co-stars with Angelina Jolie.
“Everybody in the movie was sick of me because I was walking about singing all
the time,” he said.
Filming of Phantom Of The Opera is due to begin next month.
